2026 is proving to be a breakthrough year for digital healthcare in Africa. From AI-powered tuberculosis screening to virtual hospital projects, the continent is embracing digital health solutions at an unprecedented pace – creating entirely new categories of medical device demand.


AI-Powered Diagnostics Gain Traction


In April 2026, South African medtech company AI Diagnostics raised ZAR85 million (US$5.2 million) in a pre-Series A funding round to accelerate deployment of its AI-powered Ostium digital stethoscope. The funding supports clinical research and validation for AI-powered TB screening. This reflects a broader trend: in April 2026 alone, three companies – Reme-D, AI Diagnostics, and Biovana – raised US$5.9 million in funding, with US$5.7 million invested in disease diagnostics production.

Ghana is also making strides: in July 2026, Mobile-health Network Solutions formed a US$2.5 million joint venture to launch an AI-powered digital healthcare ecosystem in Ghana, with plans for expansion across Sub-Saharan Africa


In July 2026, Ethiopia‘s Food and Drug Authority, with technical support from WHO, conducted an assisted self-benchmarking of its national regulatory system for medical devices, including in-vitro diagnostics. Ethiopia achieved WHO Maturity Level 3 for medicine regulation in 2025 and is now applying the same commitment to medical devices. With an estimated 2 million kinds of medical devices available globally, effective regulatory oversight is critical to ensuring safety, quality, and performance.

The digital health boom is creating demand for:
